TurfCare 3PA: Three-Pronged Approach to Plant Health Excellence

The pressures of increased play, player expectations, reduced resources and a changing climate are altering how we need to prepare and manage Plant Health into the future.

The TurfCare 3PA focus on three key strategic areas to produce the best playing surfaces in a sustainable environment.

  1. Plant/Soil Nutrition
  2. Moisture Management
  3. Cultivar Selection

Plant/Soil Nutrition: The key is to develop stronger plant health through proper nutrition and by correcting soil chemistry imbalances. It is critical to adopt a fully Integrated Turf Management (ITM) approach using cultural techniques in addition to utilising unique plant/soil health products for a complete nutrition management plan.

Moisture Management: The first key area to correct moisture management is to manage Organic Matter. The interaction of the organic matter (OM) moisture content and surface firmness is one of the most important relationships we need to understand. Leaf, crown and rootzone moisture must be managed correctly to avoid abiotic or biotic stress. Using new unique surfactant technology is one key area that will reduce the favourable environment for pathogen survival or establishment.

Cultivar Selection: Another key area of management is the need to improve sward grass species composition. Overseeding and increasing the amount of the New 5th Generation Creeping Bent varieties is critical. Reducing the amount of annual meadow grass present will develop a stronger more resilient sustainable playing surfaces better able to cope with the challenges we face with reduced resources.
